Cell Phones as Life Preservers

Before we give police the authority to block cell signals, we should talk to the people whose lives were saved because of cell signals.

In the Mumbai terrorist attacks, people used text messages and phone calls to communicate.

On 9/11, phones in the hands of regular people saved the Capitol or the White House from destruction. On Flight 93, passengers used cell phones and airphones to learn that other planes had hit the Trade Center. Had they not had this information, they may never have rushed the cockpit.

According to the 9-11 Commission Report:

“These calls between family, friends, and colleagues took place until the end of the flight and provided those on the ground with firsthand accounts. They enabled the passengers to gain critical information, including the news that two aircraft had slammed into the World Trade Center...At least ten passengers and two crew members shared vital information with family, friends, colleagues, or others on the ground....According to one call, they voted on whether to rush the terrorists in an attempt to retake the plane. They decided, and acted. At 9:57, the passenger assault began.”

Congress should remember these phone calls when considering whether to ban them.

It is a true; cell phones can play a welcome part in our lives. They can keep us in touch with our loved ones when they’re away from home. It can be convenient and save us time: we place a dinner order on our phones from our cars, and pick it up on our drive home. It can be a safety device when we’re all alone on the side of a road, when we’re walking down the street in a desolate, eerie alley. We can use it too call the police, to call an ambulance, to find out what time to pick up our kids. iphone 3g case

Everyone has a cell phone now and the thought of instant contact at anytime is too powerful to dismiss. On the flip side, cell phones are like a life preserver, safety is a mere phone call away in most situations.

Because when I try to come up with a definition of “Life”, this definition always includes my cell phone.Living things must eat, my phone needs to feed on electricity.Living things are aware of their environment and can react to changes in it, my phone can sense when its in range of a cell tower and when someone calls.Living things reproduce, my phone reproduces indirectly through a symbiotic relationship with human beings.
