Once again, California is proving itself way ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to disaster resilience. Check out my Time.com story on the Great Shakeout here.

I read your book the during Operation California Shakeout. I participated as a volunteer ham radio communicator at our local hospital and saw many behavior breakdowns. Saturday I engaged in a CERT Search and Rescue exercise that we sponsored and saw the difference that training makes.Your book should be required reading especially for disaster workers and government and agency disaster personnel.

you must have a plan these days for any possible outcome
it seems that california shakeout was a great success and should be a model for this kind of excersise to country wide

One of the most interesting things that turned up was that the volunteer amateur radio operators were much better prepared than the agency officials. Few officials were aware of or were able to implement the Incident Command System (ICS) or The National Incident Management System (NIMMS).
Exercises are for learning and finding problems. So in that context the drill was a success.
We are finding that often the grass roots people are pushing our leadership into doing their job. So it is apparent to me that it comes down to the individual taking care of themselves. The Boy Scouts motto “Be Prepared” is still valid for everyone. Being prepared does not mean being paranoid. As it appears now the cavalry might not come, in fact there might be no cavalry.
